Ashfield Fall Fest, Brew + Cider, and 9 more for the long weekend
By Neal Quesnel ·
It's a three-day weekend, and This Weekend has 11 picks, a few more than usual. Ashfield closes Main Street for its fall festival, the way it has every October since 1970. Paradise City brings more than 200 artists to the Three County Fairgrounds in Northampton, and ALLURA opens its first season of lit pumpkins at Look Park on Friday. The Springfield Thunderbirds open their AHL season Saturday at 6:05pm against the Laval Rocket, with a block party at The Landing from 3 to 5pm. And the Kiwanis Club of Springfield packed 10,000 meals for food pantries and shelters across Western Mass last Saturday. Here's the week as we inch closer to Halloween. A busy weekend ahead, let's dig in.

Real Estate Pulse
§ 03This Week’s Rates
Freddie Mac PMMS · October 1, 2026
| Instrument | This Wk | Last Wk | Yr Ago |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30-yr fixed | 7.28% | 7.03% | 6.34% |
| 15-yr fixed | 6.60% | 6.42% | 5.55% |
| 10-yr Treasury | 5.24% | 5.18% | 4.12% |
All three jumped this week, with the 30-year up 25bp in a single reading and now 94bp above where it sat a year ago. The 30-to-15 gap holds at 68bp, and a Valley buyer who was pre-approved two weeks ago at 7% is looking at roughly $50 more per month on every $300K borrowed. Sellers should expect longer days on market and more price-chasing through the fall.
“While I view the risks to both economic activity and employment as roughly balanced at this point, I see upside risks to inflation.”
Coming two weeks after the FOMC's September quarter-point hike to 3.75 to 4 percent, the Vice Chair flagging one-sided inflation risk is being read on the rate desk as a sign the hiking cycle is not clearly done. Traders took the remarks as confirmation that another hike before year-end stays on the table, with core PCE still at 3.4 percent and energy prices climbing.
Around Town
§ 04- · Opening
Whip City Stadium is open at Westfield High School. The city dedicated it last Friday before the Bombers played Springfield Central. Westfield Gas + Electric and Whip City Fiber paid for the $11 million athletic project, so no city tax money went into it.
- · Closure
The Starbucks inside the Holyoke Mall has closed, one of about 250 the company shut across North America last week. It was the one Western Mass store on the list, and the company said the closed locations weren't meeting its financial or customer experience standards.
- · Town
Bliss Park in Longmeadow has four clay tennis courts that have sat closed, and the town wants to know what to do with them. A survey that opened October 1 asks residents to weigh restoring the clay against pickleball, a dog park, or open green space. Take it at longmeadowma.gov/563/Bliss-Park.
- · Town
The Northfield Selectboard is deciding what to do with the middle stretch of Old Wendell Road, which the town administrator called "just a trail, if anything." One option ends maintenance but keeps the public's right to walk it. The other discontinues the road, which would need a Town Meeting vote. Either way, public hearings come first.
- · Update
The Zoo in Forest Park in Springfield lost four exhibits and six century-old oaks when a macroburst tore through after closing on August 8. No animals were hurt, including Atlas, a one-eyed coyote whose exhibit was crushed by a falling tree. The zoo reopened two Saturdays later, with help from a $100,000 Davis Foundation grant, volunteer crews, and two Longmeadow brothers who ran a lemonade stand.
- · Notice
The Friends of Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown hold a Like New Book Sale on Saturday, October 10, from 9:30am to 1:30pm in the main room. They'll have hundreds of adult titles plus some young adult and children's books, all published in the last four years and priced $1 to $5.
- · Heads up
Town offices in Ware and Erving are closed for the Monday holiday, October 12, and so are the Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown, the Greenfield Public Library, and Lilly Library in Florence. Check your own town's hours before you drive over.
Local Wins
§ 05The Kiwanis Club of Springfield filled the Springfield Elks lodge with volunteers on Saturday morning, October 3, and packed 10,000 meals for food pantries and shelters across Western Mass. Volunteers from several other local groups joined the club members.
The Pellegrini, Seeley, Ryan and Blakesley law firm in Springfield and the Kiwanis Foundation of New England paid for the meals. Club president Laura Aiello said the goal was to do something immediate for 10,000 people right here in Springfield.
Valley Fact
Calvin Coolidge
On October 4, 1905, Calvin Coolidge married Grace Goodhue in the parlor of her family's house in Northampton, at 2:30 in the afternoon. Grace was a teacher at the Clarke School for the Deaf; her mother had objected to the match. The honeymoon in Montreal was planned for two weeks and Coolidge asked to cut it a week short. Twenty-five years later he wrote that she had borne with his infirmities and he had rejoiced in her graces.
That’s the week. Say Hi to a stranger. Talk on Tuesday.
