Gravestones, Ghosts, and Ghouls

By Neal Quesnel ·

Halloween weekend fills the Valley from Deerfield to Springfield: Deerfield After Dark runs its final two nights Friday and Saturday at $30 a ticket, Historic Deerfield adds an all-day Graveyards and Gravestones program Saturday, and the Springfield Museums open their Halloween Quadrangle loop Saturday at 10am. Wendell's once-a-year haunted village activates Saturday at 6pm, Spooky Safari tickets at Forest Park Zoo close Friday at noon, and Wistariahurst in Holyoke runs a sensory-friendly trick-or-treat Sunday from 1 to 3pm. Russell landed a $1 million grant for culvert replacement in the Westfield River watershed. The 30-year fixed held flat at 7.40%, more than a full point above last October's 6.27%. And Holyoke's DementedFX is still fighting City Hall over the shuttered Cube attraction, with weekend refunds going out. Quite a weekend ahead.

This Week’s Rates

Freddie Mac PMMS · October 15, 2026

InstrumentThis WkLast WkYr Ago
30-yr fixed7.40%7.40%6.27%
15-yr fixed6.71%6.73%5.52%
10-yr Treasury5.10%5.22%4.05%

The 30-year sat flat at 7.40% while the 10-year Treasury dropped 12bp to 5.10%, which usually drags mortgage rates down with it but hasn't yet. Both mortgage rates are more than a full point above where they stood a year ago, and the 30-to-15 gap is 69bp. Valley buyers waiting for a break under 7% are still waiting; sellers pricing against last October's comps need to mark down.

Around Town

§ 04
  • · Town

DementedFX in Holyoke still has its Cube attraction shut while the main haunted house stays open, and the owners and the city tell different stories about how it got there. Mayor Joshua Garcia says Building Commissioner Leslie Ward and a fire captain came Oct. 5 after a complaint about the Cube, found the front locked, and walked in through an unlocked door off a shared hallway looking for owner Jeremie LaPointe. The owners call it an unlawful search, and their security video has Ward saying "I'm just looking for stuff that I can cite." The city shut the Cube Oct. 7, citing no fire alarms, emergency lighting or sprinklers, a shock voltage it could not pin down, and permit problems going back to July. DementedFX has asked for an independent state investigation of Ward, and Cube tickets are being refunded weekend by weekend.

  • · Town

Heath and Colrain picked up more than 500 acres of permanently protected land this month, through a joint state and conservation-group funding effort that stitched together a connected block across the two Franklin County towns.

  • · Heads up

The Rag Shag Parade returns to Easthampton on Tuesday, Oct. 27, alongside Brooms Up, Paddles Out, a companion Halloween event that doubles as a fundraiser for the Easthampton Community Center.

  • · Town

Southwick's Select Board released a draft policy at its Oct. 5 meeting setting standards for the town's security camera system. Chair Douglas Moglin said the policy had been requested previously.

  • · Recap

The Magic for Maddie 5K Walk and Carnival held its fifth annual event in Holyoke on Saturday, raising money toward cancer causes.

  • · Recap

Saint Luke's Greek Orthodox Church in East Longmeadow hosted its 27th annual Taste of Greece festival on Friday, with food, music, and traditions from Greece filling the parish.

Local Wins

§ 05

Russell, the hilltown of about 1,700 people west of Westfield, was notified last week that it has been awarded a $1 million grant to replace a culvert.

Culvert work (restoration or maintenance of a buried water pipe) is the least glamorous item on any municipal to-do list and the one that keeps the Westfield River watershed roads passable in April. Russell has been chipping at a long list of these crossings for years.

Valley Fact

Mount Holyoke College

Mount Holyoke College is the oldest of the Seven Sisters, founded by Mary Lyon in 1837 in South Hadley as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. It received its college charter in 1888, and both Vassar and Wellesley were patterned after it. The Olmsted firm landscaped the campus between 1896 and 1922, and the college's botanic garden and grounds are open to visitors year-round.

That’s the week. Say Hi to a stranger. Talk on Tuesday.
