Houdini & Halloween
By Neal Quesnel ·
One hundred years ago this Saturday, at 1:26 in the afternoon, Harry Houdini died in a Detroit hospital. It was Halloween. This year Halloween falls on a Saturday for the first time since 2020, and at 1:26pm a magician will hold a séance for him in the Lang Auditorium at the Westfield Athenaeum.
The rest of the Valley is just as ready. Friday at 5pm, a flash mob of zombies dances Thriller on Main Street in Northampton, the city’s first Thriller Parade. That night the Spirit Sisters lead a paranormal investigation up the Grand Staircase at Wistariahurst in Holyoke, in dim light. Fear on the Farm has been scaring people at McCray’s in South Hadley since 1991. 13th World in Palmer closes its season Saturday with a night it calls the Halloween Massacre, and a ride called the Burial Simulator. And the carved pumpkins of ALLURA at Look Park burn through their final weekend before going dark Sunday.
If your Halloween runs smaller, kids march up Avenue A in the Rag Shag Parade in Turners Falls, and Westfield’s Elm Street shops hand out candy for the 33rd year. Ware asks anyone who wants trick-or-treaters to leave a porch light on. Leave yours on too.
Outside the haunted stuff, Chicopee became the first Massachusetts community to put BusPatrol cameras on school bus stop arms. United is adding daily nonstops between Bradley and San Francisco, and the Easthampton City Council unanimously passed a divestment resolution before a packed house on October 21. And the 30-year fixed dipped 8 basis points to 7.32%, still more than a full point above last year’s 6.19%. Happy Halloween, Pioneer Valley.

Once a year the artists and small businesses at Eastworks open their studios to the public. On Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, from 10am to 5pm, more than 40 studios across four floors of the old Easthampton mill are open, and it's free.
See work in progress, take a hands-on workshop, and buy one-of-a-kind pieces from the people who make them. Fine art, pottery and stained glass are all on show, and there are restaurants and food trucks in the building for lunch.
Eastworks, 116 Pleasant Street, Easthampton. Free parking in front and back, accessible entrances and two elevators.

Real Estate Pulse
§ 03This Week’s Rates
Freddie Mac PMMS · October 22, 2026
| Instrument | This Wk | Last Wk | Yr Ago |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30-yr fixed | 7.32% | 7.40% | 6.19% |
| 15-yr fixed | 6.68% | 6.71% | 5.44% |
| 10-yr Treasury | 4.96% | 5.10% | 3.97% |
All three ticked down, with the 10-year Treasury leading the move at 14bp and the 30-year following for an 8bp drop. Both mortgage rates still sit more than a full point above where they were a year ago, so this is a breather, not a turn. For Valley buyers who have been pre-approved and watching, it is a window to re-run the numbers; sellers should not expect it to shake loose the fence-sitters.

Valley Fact
Friendly's
Friendly's started in 1935 as a single shop in Springfield and later made Wilbraham its headquarters. When the chain filed for Chapter 11 in October 2011 and closed 63 restaurants, its owner Sun Capital offered about $75 million through an affiliate to keep it. No outside bidder came forward, the December 22 auction was canceled, and a judge approved the sale on December 29.
That’s the week. Say Hi to a stranger. Talk on Tuesday.
